Tragic Loss of Promising High School Football Player
A talented high school football player, Ryder Burns, who was set to join Cal Poly, has tragically passed away. He was just 17 years old.
In a heartfelt statement shared on Friday, Mustangs head coach Tim Skipper expressed the team’s sorrow over the loss. “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Ryder Burns,” he stated. “Ryder was an exceptional young man with immense potential. This loss hits hard for all of us. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and everyone mourning this immense loss.”
Ryder, only 17, had recently committed to play football at Cal Poly, sharing his excitement about his future on November 3, 2025, with a heartfelt message. Beyond his skills on the field, he was remembered for being a young man of character and compassion.
His school described him as leaving a significant mark both on and off the field. They stated, “There are no words powerful enough to convey our grief. Today, we celebrate an extraordinary individual who led with bravery and touched many lives.”
Burns excelled as a defensive end, earning accolades such as Epsilon League Defensive Player of the Year, along with recognition as All-Orange County and Defensive MVP. Still, his school emphasized that these honors only scratch the surface of who he was as a person.
Ryder had strong family ties, being raised by his grandparents while looking after his younger sister. He was adored by his siblings and remembered as a loyal teammate and friend throughout his community.
The void left by his passing is deeply felt. The school pledged to keep his spirit alive, saying, “Your light and energy will never fade. You were more than a teammate; you were family. In memory of you, we will champion your legacy with every play and every game.”
At 6-foot-3 and 230 pounds, Ryder would have celebrated his 18th birthday in October. One of his friends, Noah Thayer, who is also joining Cal Poly as a five-star kicker, shared his heartfelt sentiments on social media: “Everything is in God’s hands. I miss you, buddy. I’m honored to have had you in my life. See you soon.”
