Fisher Cats Achieve Unusual Feat in Game Against Sea Dogs

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats, Double-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, recently pulled off a remarkable achievement that’s quite rare in baseball’s post-expansion era.

During their sixth consecutive matchup against the Portland Sea Dogs, pitchers from the opposing team contributed to a series of walks, wild pitches, and strikeouts, which allowed the Fisher Cats to shine.

Although New Hampshire fell behind 2-0 early in Tuesday’s contest with the Sea Dogs, they managed to score eight runs in the second inning without even registering a hit. It’s, well, kind of surprising.

In what became a moment for the books, the Fisher Cats went on to score 9 runs in the first inning with just one hit and no errors, ultimately clinching a 12-7 victory. The Sea Dogs’ pitchers issued eight walks and allowed two hits, alongside four wild pitches and a sacrifice fly.

Sea Dogs president Jeff Iacquessa expressed disbelief at the unusual turn of events. “I don’t remember seeing anything like that here or any other game I’ve ever seen,” he stated, reflecting on his surprise during an interview.

The game took place under chilly conditions, with the temperature dipping just below freezing at first pitch. It’s kind of wild to think about having to clear the field after heavy snowfall earlier in the day.

Portland’s starting pitcher, Hayden Mullins, initially struck out a batter but quickly struggled with control, leading to three consecutive walks. After a series of mishaps, the game spiraled into chaos, allowing New Hampshire to capitalize.

Following Mullins, Jorge Juan took over as a reliever but faced difficulties, hitting batters and allowing wild pitches. The situation escalated to a 10-2 lead for New Hampshire, fueled by Ismael Munguia’s two-run homer.

Munguia recently represented Nicaragua in the World Baseball Classic, showcasing his talent on a global stage. It’s impressive to see such achievements come full circle in the minors.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, what the Fisher Cats pulled off is exceptionally rare—not just in minors, but even in the major leagues. Scoring more than four runs in an inning without a hit is essentially unheard of.
