Local Real Estate Agent Plays in the Masters

A real estate agent from Bloomington, Illinois has just wrapped up participation in the prestigious 90th Masters Tournament. Brandon Holtz, a 39-year-old father, earned his spot in Augusta through a rather unexpected pathway.

In September, Holtz clinched victory at the U.S. Mid-Amateur Tournament held at Troon Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona. His win earned him an invite to the Masters, a privilege extended to winners of this event since 2018.

With a handicap of +4.1, Holtz is quite skilled, surpassing the average player significantly as per the United States Golf Association’s Golf Handicap Information Network. To qualify for the tournament, participants need a handicap of 2.4 or greater and must be at least 25 years old, so Holtz comfortably met those requirements.

Interestingly, this was his first USGA-sanctioned event, he revealed. “It’s me against the course,” he noted. While he’s ranked 3,267th in amateur standings due to limited points, his golf skills clearly shine through.

Interestingly, he shot a 63 to win a local qualifier in Illinois, which paved his way to Arizona for a four-day tournament that combined stroke and match play. In fact, one of his quarterfinal matches stretched to 19 holes before he advanced, ultimately winning the final match 3&2.

On a personal note, Holtz’s father has held a lifetime Masters badge since 2004, making the course somewhat familiar to him, yet actually playing it was a different ballgame. “I’m pretty sure you could see my heart beating in my chest on the first tee shot,” he said, reflecting on the pressure of being paired with two-time champion Bubba Watson.

His father had the honor of caddying during the second round, though they missed the cut after a challenging 15-over performance. Still, Holtz will have a memorable story to share when he returns to his real estate duties.
