Shannon Elizabeth shares her reasons for stepping away from Hollywood to live in South Africa.

Shannon Elizabeth’s Journey Beyond Hollywood

After gaining recognition from her role as Nadia in “American Pie,” Shannon Elizabeth made a big lifestyle change. In late 2016, she left Hollywood behind, packed her bags, and relocated to South Africa. Fast forward to 2018, she established the Shannon Elizabeth Foundation, a charity focused on conservation.

During an interview, the 52-year-old actress recounted pivotal moments from this transition. She recalled standing in a bustling New York crosswalk, observing everyone glued to their phones. In contrast, her experiences in Africa made her acutely aware of real-world issues. “The challenges in Africa felt, and still feel, very real,” she said.

Motivated by the pressing concerns for wildlife, she expressed the belief that her work back in the States seemed insignificant. It was a call to action; she felt the need to engage directly with these issues, which ultimately fueled her decision to move. Elizabeth had long been passionate about animal welfare, founding Animal Avengers, a rescue group, back in 2001. Yet, her desire to contribute on a larger scale led her to this new path.

In 2015, an ivory and rhino horn destruction event in New York piqued her interest. This event highlighted the struggle against poaching, driving her deeper into conservation efforts. She soon found herself collaborating with various conservationists in South Africa, learning more about endangered species and what she could do to help.

As she immersed herself in these efforts, she realized she wanted her contributions to be more substantial. “I just wanted to make a difference, to engage meaningfully with these causes,” she said. After discussions with local conservationists, Elizabeth became involved in dehorning rhinos to protect them from poachers. This was just the start of her commitment.

Elizabeth reflected on the foundation’s accomplishments, mentioning how they funded salaries for rangers during the COVID-19 pandemic and aided anti-poaching teams. A blind black rhino, whom they had helped, inspired her to create a reserve, which they hope to expand. “We’re actively looking to develop an orphanage and rehabilitation center, plus create storage areas for moving animals to different parts of Africa,” she noted.

Even though she misses aspects of American life—like the food and the energetic vibe of cities like New York—Elizabeth feels fulfilled by her decision. “I love the magic of New York,” she said, reminiscing about its allure. Yet, she finds a unique beauty in Cape Town, where her base camp is located, revealing that often, Africa is imagined only through a lens of wildlife adventures.

Reflecting on her early acting career, she recalls the daunting audition process for “American Pie,” describing it as terrifying. But despite those challenges, the character of Nadia became a pivotal point in her life. After the film’s success, she quickly became a prominent face in the comedy genre. Yet, Elizabeth’s ambitions extended beyond her on-screen persona; she sought deeper engagement in causes like wildlife protection.

There’s an openness in her voice when she discusses the future, hinting that, while she’s focused on her charitable work, the idea of revisiting her role as Nadia isn’t entirely off the table. “I think it would be fun to explore what Nadia is up to now, maybe in her home country,” she laughed, suggesting a new chapter for her character could be interesting.

For Shannon Elizabeth, life isn’t just about fame; it’s about leaving a mark on the world she cares about. And while there are always challenges, she seems firmly dedicated to her mission, with no regrets about the journey she’s taken.
