26-Year-Old Woman Experienced Severe Itching but Was Told 'It's Just One of Those Things.' She Then Self-Diagnosed Her Cancer.

NEED TO KNOW

  • A young woman experienced severe itching and ultimately diagnosed herself with cancer.

  • Sumbul Ari faced skepticism from several doctors, one of whom suggested she simply moisturize.

  • “Being told I had cancer was relieving. I finally had an answer. But I was really frustrated with all the doctors who dismissed me, and very, very angry,” she shared.

A young woman dealt with extreme itching, which numerous doctors overlooked. Sumbul Ari, feeling lost, took matters into her own hands and diagnosed herself with cancer.

Ari told PEOPLE that she was “fit, healthy, and very active,” having run half marathons and engaged in powerlifting and indoor rowing before her health issues arose.

“I was at the gym six days a week. I’ve never smoked, drank moderately, slept eight to nine hours, and I rarely got sick,” she continued. “Before all this, my health was always good, and I had annual blood tests that showed everything in normal range.”

When her itching began at the age of 26, Ari initially thought it might be an allergic reaction to products like perfumes or soaps. She started eliminating potential triggers, but nothing seemed to help.

Along with the itching, she faced night sweats and skin issues, attributing them to hormonal changes. However, as additional symptoms surfaced—like fatigue and changes in her voice—Ari realized something more serious was at play.

Ari recalled, “After two months of itching, I visited the first doctor. I told him I was scratching myself at night, feeling like there were things crawling under my skin.”

She had no visible rashes, but the doctor suggested moisturizing, attributing her symptoms to the weather. A second doctor treated her for an infection and, despite her recounting persistent symptoms, dismissed her concerns.

She remembers his words: “It’s just one of those things.” This left her feeling unheard.

Despite normal blood test results, Ari eventually felt like giving up but continued researching her symptoms online.

Going down what she called a “Reddit rabbit hole,” she explored various possibilities, even checking for mold in her home and trying various home remedies. None worked. She consulted several more doctors, undergoing tests and treatments without relief.

After one promising visit with a naturopath, she noticed her symptoms returning with increased severity.

Ari also discovered a lump in her neck and, after a quick Google search, connected all her symptoms—itchy skin, night sweats, and fatigue—realizing she might have cancer.

After more doctor visits, she received a diagnosis of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. “At that moment, I just wanted the itching to stop and to get some quality sleep,” she explained. “I was completely drained, emotionally and physically.”

Receiving the cancer diagnosis brought some relief as it finally provided an explanation. Yet, Ari couldn’t shake the anger toward the doctors who had dismissed her.

Ari is currently undergoing chemotherapy. “Since starting, all my prior symptoms have disappeared,” she noted, highlighting a now restful night’s sleep and reduced discomfort.

“Every morning, I wake up grateful for sleep,” she said. “I’d forgotten what it felt like to be well-rested.”

Despite some unavoidable tiredness, she manages it by taking naps and stays committed to her health routine, incorporating daily movement, healthy eating, and positivity.

Reflecting on her journey, Ari emphasized the importance of self-advocacy: “I never stopped fighting for my health, even when no one would listen.”

Her advice to others? “Don’t neglect your health. If something feels wrong, keep seeking answers until you find someone who acknowledges your concerns.” She added that it’s okay to focus on yourself during these challenging times, prioritizing healing and inner peace.

“Life can become clearer when you strip things back to basics. Face each day as it comes, cherish your loved ones, and allow yourself to rest without guilt,” she advised. “You’re not falling behind; you’re simply navigating life differently at this moment, and that’s completely fine.”
