Rep. Swalwell to Resign Amid Sexual Assault Allegations

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) has announced his resignation from the House of Representatives following several sexual assault accusations that threatened his bid for governor in California.

In a statement on Monday, Swalwell expressed his intention to step down. He stated, “I deeply apologize to my family, staff, and constituents for the errors of judgment I made in the past. I will fight the serious and false allegations that have been made against me. However, I must take responsibility and accountability for the mistakes I made.”

The congressman criticized efforts to expel him from Congress “without due process,” noting that he would collaborate with his staff to ensure a smooth transition in the coming days.

Swalwell added, “I am aware that there is an effort to introduce an immediate expulsion resolution against me and other members. It is wrong to remove anyone from Congress without due process within days of an allegation being made. But it is also wrong for voters to distract me from my duties.” Given the circumstances, he decided to resign, stating he would support his staff to address the needs of the 14th District while he is away.

Reports have surfaced, including one from a former employee who accused Swalwell of sexual assault, claiming they had sexual relations after a night of drinking, during which she lacked the mental capacity to consent. Additionally, three other women alleged Swalwell sent them unsolicited nude photos and graphic messages.

Swalwell’s resignation follows increasing calls from Democrats and former aides to remove him from office. Over 50 former staffers expressed their support for the accuser in an open letter, emphasizing her bravery in coming forward.

This announcement came shortly after the U.S. House Ethics Committee initiated an investigation into Swalwell regarding the allegations against him. The committee stated it was looking into claims of sexual misconduct, including interactions with employees under Swalwell’s supervision.
