Andrew Yang Questions Eric Swalwell’s Political Ambitions Amid Resignation

Andrew Yang, who competed with Eric Swalwell during the 2020 Democratic presidential primary, recently expressed skepticism about Swalwell’s aspirations for higher office, coinciding with Swalwell’s announcement to resign from the House on Monday.

Yang characterized Swalwell’s political journey as “light,” stating he lacks the depth and intelligence needed for serious policy discussions. He suggested that Swalwell’s focus is more on personal advancement rather than genuinely advocating for his beliefs.

Reflecting on a past debate, Yang recalled how Swalwell challenged Joe Biden in 2019, suggesting it was time for a generational shift in politics. Biden’s response, however, was less than encouraging, and Swalwell soon dropped out. Yang noted how, since 2020, Swalwell has become a frequent presence on Democratic news outlets, but during the recent discussions surrounding Biden’s age, Swalwell was noticeably absent, seemingly opting for a safer, party-aligned approach.

According to Yang, aspiring candidates for significant public office—especially the presidency—should possess a range of qualities: vision, intelligence, charisma, and even a moral compass. However, he argued that Swalwell lacks these essential traits. Currently, Yang is campaigning for the mayoralty of New York City and has established the Progressive Party.

Even after his presidential bid in 2020 came up short, Yang founded a nonprofit named Humanity Forward and has been serving as a media contributor.

Yang mentioned knowing Swalwell fairly well but not being very close to him. He referred to Swalwell’s previous sexual misconduct issues as an “open secret” within political circles in both Washington, D.C., and California.

When commenting on Swalwell’s situation, Yang likened him to Icarus from Greek mythology, who famously flew too close to the sun and faced dire consequences. He suggested that Swalwell’s best option now might be to retain his House seat while preparing for a stronger challenge in the future.

Both Democratic and Republican voices have recently called for Swalwell’s departure, especially in light of new sexual misconduct allegations against him. This even led to Sen. Ruben Gallego, who previously defended Swalwell, distancing himself following backlash.

In response to the allegations, California’s Democratic Party Chairman Rusty Hicks stated that they are profoundly troubling.

When asked about Swalwell’s resignation decision, Speaker Nancy Pelosi remarked that it seemed wise based on the circumstances. Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren also expressed her approval, emphasizing the accountability of those in power.
