Updates on Yankees Pitchers Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon

While no formal decision has been made yet, it seems that Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon are nearing a stint at a rehabilitation facility.

On Sunday, Cole threw 42 pitches over approximately three innings during a simulated game in Hudson Valley. Meanwhile, Rodon completed three innings of live batting practice in the Bronx on Monday, tossing over 50 pitches.

Manager Aaron Boone mentioned on Monday that both players aim to pitch again within five days. However, he hasn’t clarified whether this would involve another simulated practice or if they are ready to start their minor league journey.

Cole, who had Tommy John surgery back in March 2025, has shown good progress and is ready to begin stretching exercises.

“The stamina was good,” Cole remarked about the Yankees’ mock game before their match with the Angels. “The pitch is fine now. Everything is good, although there are some details to work on.”

Boone also stated that Rodon “looks like he’s doing well.” Rodon had a strained hamstring two weeks ago, which interrupted his rehab schedule. After Monday’s session, he managed to run sprints in the outfield.

If both Cole and Rodon can stay healthy, the Yankees will have to make a decision on the rotation when they return, potentially in May or June. Lewis Gil started the season in the minors and will likely need to secure a more stable role, while Will Warren, while not as high-potential as Ryan Weathers, offers reliability.

The pitching lineup, which includes two top-tier arms alongside Clark Schmidt, has performed admirably.

“I thought we got off to a great start,” Cole stated. “We were aggressive in the strike zone. We’ve faced some consequences when we weren’t, but we’ve managed to keep it under control. Every game this year has focused on the main event… There are many encouraging signs.”
