Jim Nantz Reflects on CBS’ Coverage of Masters
On Tuesday, Jim Nantz acknowledged that CBS didn’t quite nail the coverage of Rory McIlroy’s Masters win.
During his appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” the famed broadcaster expressed that the moment McIlroy made his winning putt could have been handled better. “This is a live broadcast,” he explained. “We all make mistakes.”
However, Nantz was also proud of the CBS team during the Masters weekend, emphasizing the challenges of live broadcasting. “I’m really proud of our crew. You guys are making a lot of decisions on the fly,” he noted. “I can’t speak to the challenges or the decision-making, but our teams are the best in the industry.”
There was some criticism aimed at CBS for questioning the placement of McIlroy’s last four shots, especially a bold attempt through the woods that ended up in a sand trap near the green.
Moreover, the network missed the right angle for McIlroy’s putt since he blocked the hole from view on the final shot.
Interestingly, instead of focusing primarily on the golf itself, the broadcast spent considerable time showcasing McIlroy’s young fans at his home golf club in Hollywood, Ireland.
Despite the coverage flaws, the final round of the Masters turned out to be one of the most exciting in years. McIlroy had a record six-shot lead heading into Saturday but found himself tied with Cam Young going into the final round.
Ultimately, McIlroy emerged victorious, edging Scottie Scheffler by a single stroke to finish at 12 under par.
