Beshear’s Emotional Save Leads Dodgers to Win Over Mets
In a memorable moment during Tuesday’s 2-1 victory against the Mets, Alex Beshear notched his second save of the season, turning the night into something special.
Usually, Edwin Diaz would be the go-to for closing the game. But, well, he’s been dealing with some issues that have left everyone a bit unsure about his performance.
Earlier in the day, the Dodgers had Diaz throw a bullpen session to assess his arm’s condition, which has been hampered by a decline in speed. He hadn’t pitched in four days following a challenging outing last Friday that raised some flags about his velocity. Manager Dave Roberts shared that the decision to have Diaz pitch again came from the coaching staff and training team.
“You have to go through protocols,” Roberts mentioned, adding that they wanted to ensure Diaz was fit before returning to the mound.
On a positive note, Roberts said the session should help clarify any lingering doubts about the $69 million closer’s fitness.
The team had conducted evaluations on Diaz’s surgically repaired knee after he reported some discomfort recently. Diaz, however, assured reporters that he felt fine, even as Roberts remained cautious about whether Diaz would end up on the injured list.
On the bright side, Roberts noticed an uptick in Diaz’s velocity, which was encouraging. “For the bullpen session, that’s exactly what you want to see,” he stated.
If all goes well, they’re hopeful that Diaz will be able to pitch in the series finale against the Mets, his former team, later this week. “Honestly, I felt it was benign from the beginning,” Roberts added. “We just needed to be cautious, and we were.”
