Math Teacher, 37, Taken into Custody After Student Refers to Her as His 'Girlfriend'

Florida Teacher Arrested for Sexual Misconduct with Student

A 37-year-old math teacher in Florida has been arrested following allegations of a sexual relationship with a high school student. This incident highlights the ongoing issue of educator sexual misconduct in the United States. The teacher reportedly confessed to the student’s parents that their son’s “girlfriend” was actually his math teacher.

Kirsten Rose, employed at Cocoa Beach High School, was taken into custody last Friday, five months after initiating contact with the student on Instagram outside school hours. The conversations began in November.

According to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, the relationship progressed into the new year, culminating in sexual encounters in February and March.

The situation began to unravel when the boy’s parents took notice of his late hours. Upon asking about his whereabouts, he mentioned being with his “girlfriend” but didn’t disclose her identity. When they discovered he was at an unknown house, their concerns grew.

Following a confrontation with their son, he eventually admitted to the affair with his teacher.

Cocoa Beach is situated on Florida’s Atlantic coast, just south of Kennedy Space Center. Rose now faces multiple charges for unlawful sexual activity with a minor and is currently detained in Brevard County Jail. Her arraignment is set for May 5.

The age and grade of the student have not been released, and the investigation remains active. Officials are urging anyone with information about the case to contact the Special Victims Unit.

This arrest adds to a troubling trend of school officials across the nation being implicated in sexual misconduct involving minors. Research highlights that, despite attention often being given to female teachers in relationships with underage males, a significant majority of such incidents actually involve male educators.

Experts have suggested that social media and a culture of silence contribute to the prevalence of these cases. Sharol Shakeshaft, a prominent researcher on this topic, has indicated that the scale of misconduct within schools may be far greater than instances reported within other organizations, such as the Catholic Church.
