Democratic candidates vying for Eric Swalwell's support focus on his family-oriented persona

The downfall of Eric Swalwell’s campaign has opened up a path for lesser-known Democrats in California’s gubernatorial election, with some candidates adopting a family-oriented image.

Former U.S. Health Secretary Xavier Becerra and San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan are focusing on their personal integrity and past experiences as voters reassess their options in light of Swalwell’s recent resignation amid serious allegations of misconduct.

Michael Bustamante, speaking for Becerra’s team, highlighted Becerra’s longstanding marriage to Carolina Reyes, a physician, as evidence of his stability.

Becerra recently made headlines by cutting short a media interview to celebrate his daughter and wife’s birthdays, both of whom work as immigration lawyers in Salinas.

“Experience matters, and Xavier has the most in this race,” Bustamante stated.

“He might not be the flashiest candidate, but he surely has a steady hand, and his skills will shine when he takes on the role of governor.”

Mahan’s campaign has adopted a similar tone, portraying him as a relatable family man with a grounded lifestyle.

Political consultant Raghu Devguptap described Mahan as “the perfect example of a family man.”

“He and his wife have two kids and are a wonderful family,” he remarked. “Plus, there are no secrets lurking in his past.”

Recent campaign strategies have showcased Mahan’s family life, from visits to the San Jose farmers market to how he and his wife Sylvia, who leads Cristo Rey San Jose, juggle family with campaign demands.

“Our latest advertising focuses on being relatable,” Devguptap noted. “He’s just a warm and down-to-earth person. The more people witness that, the more they’ll be drawn to him.”

Swalwell, who denies the allegations against him, has left supporters and donors in a challenging position following his endorsement of prominent Democratic contenders.

Both Becerra and Mahan are keen to find traction after previously trailing behind more established contenders like progressive billionaire Tom Steyer and former Congresswoman Katie Porter.

Now, with Swalwell out of the picture, the campaigns are eager for a fresh start. One can only hope the advertisements don’t start leaning into the whole dad bod trend.
