LaMelo Ball Fined for Flagrant Foul in Play-In Game

LaMelo Ball of the Hornets received a $35,000 fine for a Flagrant 2 foul on Bam Adebayo during the NBA play-in tournament against the Heat. The incident took place in the second quarter—Ball fell while attempting a shot and accidentally hit Adebayo’s leg, causing him to fall and leave the game due to a lower back issue.

Initially, the foul wasn’t called, but after reviewing the play, the league decided it was a Flagrant 2 due to “unnecessary and reckless contact,” which posed a significant risk of injury.

Adebayo didn’t return after the incident, and the Heat ended up losing the game 127-126 in overtime.

In addition to the foul fine, Ball was also penalized $25,000 for using profanity during a live post-game interview.

Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra expressed frustration regarding Adebayo’s condition after the match. He said, “I haven’t seen it, but I don’t think it’s cute. It’s a dangerous play. Obviously, our best player was eliminated.” Spoelstra acknowledged the Hornets’ performance in the game, noting the missed opportunities for his team.

Ball later addressed the situation, offering an apology for his actions. “I hit my head and didn’t really know where I was, but I’m going to see how it goes,” he commented, expressing concern for Adebayo’s well-being.

Despite the chaos, Ball managed to score 30 points in the game and even made a crucial layup moments before the final buzzer, sealing the win for the Hornets.

There was also a lighthearted moment post-game when Ball interacted with the Hornets mascot Hugo, humorously surprising him by playfully punching him in the head, a spontaneous reaction to the victory.
