Attempted Attack on OpenAI CEO Linked to Extremist Views

A 20-year-old individual who allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail at OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s residence had motives rooted in extreme beliefs about artificial intelligence, inspired by a figure named Luigi Mangione, according to recently uncovered documents.

The Wall Street Journal first revealed that Daniel Moreno-Gama discussed “Luigi the Technology CEO” in an online exchange with the creators of “The Last Invention,” a podcast addressing the trajectory of AI. However, in a podcast recording from earlier this year, he clarified that his intentions were not literal.

“I get the frustration from those who think that way, but it’s not a realistic path,” Moreno-Gama mentioned. “It’s not really worth it.” This statement perhaps reveals some self-awareness about the absurdity of his actions, although it raises other questions about his mindset.

Luigi Mangione, a former valedictorian and Ivy League graduate aged 27, is facing charges for the murder of CEO Brian Thompson in New York City back in December 2024. He was apprehended in Pennsylvania and has pleaded not guilty. His trial in New York is set for September 8, and a separate federal trial is anticipated for late 2026 or early 2027.

Moreno-Gama did not issue a statement last week in connection to the attempted murder of Altman. Federal prosecutors indicated that he brought a three-part manifesto with him while traveling to the Bay Area to execute his plans against Altman’s home and OpenAI’s headquarters. A search of his residence in Texas was conducted by the FBI recently.

The first section of the manifesto, labeled “Your Last Warning,” detailed, “If I’m going to defend the murders and criminal acts of others, I must lead by example and demonstrate my commitment to my message.”

Prosecutors also disclosed that Moreno-Gama had compiled a list of names and addresses of prominent figures in AI, including directors and CEOs.

The second segment of the manifesto discussed potential threats posed by AI, something he called “A More About the Imminent Extinction Problem.” The third part contained a letter addressed to Altman, stating, “If by some miracle you survive, I would view that as a divine sign for you to redeem yourself…”

In regards to the incident, police reported that the explosive device thrown by Moreno-Gama did not ignite as intended but rather detonated at the front gate of Altman’s home. Shortly thereafter, he attempted to break a window at OpenAI’s headquarters, an event caught on surveillance cameras.

Moreno-Gama is scheduled for a court appearance on May 5 at 9 a.m. to face formal charges. San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins has announced intentions to pursue a no-bail hold, citing his potential danger to public safety. He will be indicted separately on federal charges.

If found guilty of state charges, Moreno-Gama could be looking at a life sentence.
