Harris sparks 2028 presidential campaign talks with her visit to South Carolina

Harris Sparks 2028 Presidential Speculation with Recent Campaign Stops

Former Vice President Kamala Harris toured key presidential primary states this week, which has led to renewed discussion about her potential candidacy for the 2028 election.

Harris visited Greenville on Wednesday and is set to be in Columbia, South Carolina on Thursday. South Carolina has played a crucial role in early voting for the Democratic nomination for over twenty years, so any candidate’s presence there creates buzz about their future ambitions.

The attention on Harris grew right after she made some intriguing comments at a large Democratic livestock rally just days ago.

Hints of a 2028 Run

During the National Action Network’s 35th anniversary convention last Friday, when asked if she might run for president again, Harris replied, “Maybe. Maybe. I’m thinking about it… I’ll keep you posted.”

After losing to President Donald Trump in the 2024 race, where she stood in for then-President Joe Biden, Harris was greeted with chants of “running again” from the audience.

The convention gathered influential black leaders and activists, providing an important platform for Harris and other Democratic candidates to connect with a vital segment of the party’s base.

Black voters are particularly significant in South Carolina, and Harris, the first woman and first Black vice president in U.S. history, received a warm reception at a fundraiser in Greenville.

Speculations Rise At Democratic Conference

On her agenda for Thursday, Harris is set to hold an event tied to her memoir, “107 Days,” giving a reflective look at her 2024 campaign.

After a quieter period post-Biden administration, she re-emerged in the political arena last spring, taking on fundraising leadership for the Democratic National Committee.

Her choice last summer to forgo a possible 2026 gubernatorial run in California seems to signal her intentions for a presidential bid in 2028. This segment of her book tour has helped her expand her email list and boost donor interest while enhancing her public presence.

Harris’s current southern campaign strategy includes fundraising efforts in Georgia and North Carolina, which are vital battleground states. She narrowly lost both states, along with others, to Trump in the previous election.

As one veteran strategist in her circle mentioned, “Of course we’re reading the tea leaves,” pointing to Harris’s busy schedule.

Future Prospects for Harris

The future remains uncertain for Harris. “No one knows what she has planned for 2028, but until she speaks for herself, she will continue to travel and advocate for the issues she cares about most,” added the strategist, who preferred to remain unnamed.

If Harris does decide to run again in 2028, she is likely to emerge as one of the early frontrunners in what is expected to be a competitive Democratic primary.

The Republican National Committee has already taken note of this unfolding scenario, with their national press secretary commenting on the Democratic candidates, suggesting that Harris and others are simply trying to redeem their previous records.
