Dallas Wings address Azzi Fudd's inquiry regarding Paige Bueckers

WNBA Draft Highlights Significant News Beyond Picks

The primary takeaway from Monday night’s WNBA Draft wasn’t solely the Dallas Wings selecting Azi Fudd as the first overall pick. It also surfaced that Fudd, a former star at the University of Connecticut, is in a relationship with Paige Bueckers, a franchise player for the Wings and also a UConn alum.

The affectionate nickname “Patsy,” used by fans for the couple, has attracted considerable attention—drawing in even those who might not typically follow women’s basketball, leading to some rather misguided assumptions.

One prevalent misconception is that Dallas’s decision to draft Fudd was solely influenced by her connection to Bueckers. That simply isn’t accurate.

Regardless of who held the No. 1 pick, Fudd would have emerged as the top choice. She boasts an impressive collegiate career, being one of the highest-scoring players in school history, with exceptional shooting stats. It feels unfair to label her a “cheater” because of her relationship status.

Moreover, she seamlessly fits the Wings’ roster needs. With Arike Ogunbowale and Bueckers handling the team’s offense, the Wings needed someone to create space—and Fudd excels at being an off-ball shooter.

After acquiring Alana Smith and Jessica Shepherd during free agency, a big player was not a pressing need for the team. Plus, the chemistry she’d bring with Bueckers is undoubtedly a bonus.

Reunion of Former UConn Stars in Dallas

However, the situation took a different turn during Fudd’s initial press conference on Thursday. A reporter asked a rather valid question about their relationship following a TikTok announcement from Bueckers last year, probing into whether they had discussed how to manage their partnership as teammates.

Before Fudd could reply, a Wings publicist stepped in, stating that while they understand these questions arise, they prefer to keep players’ private lives out of discussions.

I get the instinct behind that reaction. Teams often try to shield their players from unnecessary scrutiny, and athletes’ dating lives typically aren’t the focus of press conferences.

But in this case, when your partner is also a key player on the team, it becomes a relevant topic. The question posed wasn’t invasive; it aimed to explore how the two would balance their professional and personal lives.

By quickly shutting down the inquiry, the Wings seemed to amplify the issue rather than quell it.

If Fudd had addressed it herself, providing a straightforward answer, it could have put the matter to rest. She’s a professional, and a simple acknowledgment could have easily redirected the conversation back to basketball.

The current PR strategy may not hold up indefinitely. Ignoring this relationship isn’t sustainable.

The Wing’s Approach to Transparency

This relationship is public knowledge. Everyone is aware of it, as Fudd and Bueckers appeared together at the draft.

But trying to suppress it entirely, especially as the league evolves, is unrealistic. With recent changes leading to higher salaries and recognition, players are capturing more attention, which naturally invites more inquiries—even if some are a bit awkward.

The Wings don’t need to make this relationship the focal point of every discussion, yet trying to completely dismiss it may not be the best approach. As the league grows, accommodating these dynamics in a more open manner could prove beneficial.

Attempting to minimize the issue only makes it appear more problematic than it truly is.
