Tennessee Governor Approves Resolution Designating June as 'Nuclear Family Month'

Tennessee Governor Declares Nuclear Family Month

Tennessee’s Governor Bill Lee has officially signed a resolution declaring June, typically associated with Pride Month, as Nuclear Family Month. He emphasized that the nuclear family—defined as a household with one husband, one wife, and their biological or adopted children—represents what he calls “God’s plan for the family structure.”

The resolution asserts that since the world’s creation, this family structure has served as the foundation of society. It highlights that the nuclear family has been essential for Tennessee’s development and has played a pivotal role in the formation of the United States.

The document opens with a statement making it clear that the nuclear family has historically been vital, not just in Tennessee but also in shaping the nation’s ideals.

It mentions that the nuclear family, made up of a husband, wife, and their biological or adopted children, reflects God’s design for family and has been critical since time immemorial.

Continuing his stance, Lee claims that the nuclear family is foundational to America’s prosperity and societal well-being.

The resolution also points out that families led by mothers are about four times more likely to experience poverty compared to those with married couples. Additionally, children from fatherless homes face a significantly higher risk of substance abuse and mental health issues.

Statistics included in the resolution state that youth without fathers are 20 times more likely to end up incarcerated. Furthermore, a 2016 study indicated that a staggering 85% of young individuals in prison came from fatherless families. It also noted that a high percentage of school shooters grew up in unstable environments or without their biological parents together.

This resolution claims that the nuclear family is currently “under attack.” It has been passed by both chambers of the Republican-led state legislature, but it does not hold binding authority.

In response, a spokesperson for a nonprofit organization devoted to LGBTQ advocacy remarked that such resolutions reflect a lack of understanding among elected officials. The Advocate, a news source focused on LGBTQ+ issues, commented that families come in all forms, and the most substantial ones are built on love.
