Why Shane Lowry felt too down to celebrate with Rory McIlroy after the Masters win

Shane Lowry Reflects on Masters Performance

Following a tough final round at the Masters, Shane Lowry expressed little enthusiasm for celebrating his close friend Rory McIlroy’s victory, marking his second consecutive win at the tournament.

After finishing with an 80 and slipping to a tie for 30th place, Lowry was asked during the RBC Heritage’s opening round if he’d be joining in on McIlroy’s celebrations.

“That wasn’t the case,” Lowry noted, recalling how he celebrated McIlroy’s previous win in 2025 with a visit to his home. “I texted him on Sunday night and said, ‘Honestly, I’m really happy for you, but I don’t feel like coming over tonight to celebrate.’”

Lowry shared that he spent the evening feeling down about his performance, preferring to stay home with his team rather than participate in the festivities. “I’ll catch up with him in Florida in a few weeks,” he added.

The friendship between Lowry and McIlroy has roots in their junior golfing days in Ireland. However, Lowry’s experience at this year’s Masters was anything but pleasant. He noted three double bogeys and five bogeys, resulting in a significant loss of around $900,000 in prize money.

“It’s been a tough few days,” Lowry commented at the RBC Heritage, where he managed to shoot a 1-under 70 in the opening round. “I felt like I played a lot of good golf last week but didn’t get the results.”

He reflected on the challenges of preparing for a major tournament and performing at a high level consistently. “I tried to focus on the positives,” he remarked.

Before the Masters, Lowry and McIlroy were seen enjoying time with family during the Par 3 Contest, both looking cheerful.

Lowry had entered the final round with a two-shot lead but struggled after a double bogey on the fifth hole.

In a recent episode of Full Swing, a Netflix series spotlighting prominent figures in golf, McIlroy acknowledged Lowry as a role model, underscoring their lasting friendship.
