Arch Manning’s Surprising Discount
Initially, many believed Arch Manning’s financial demands were sky-high, but Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian recently clarified that Manning has opted for a significant reduction in his salary.
“Arch could have commanded six or seven million dollars,” Sarkisian remarked. “For just an additional $5 million, we could also bring in players like Cam Coleman and Hollywood Smothers.”
Manning is reportedly set to earn $2 million this year, which is notably lower than some earlier forecasts suggesting he might receive anywhere from $5.5 million to $6.8 million—making him the highest-paid college football player.
While Manning surely has sponsorship agreements that could enhance his earnings, the current figure represents a considerable markdown.
Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith is expected to be close behind him, projected to secure around $4.2 million in NIL deals.
With Manning taking a pay cut, Texas is now better positioned to allocate funds toward recruiting players like Coleman from Auburn and running back Smothers from North Carolina State.
The hype surrounding Manning is intense, being the nephew of legendary quarterbacks Peyton and Eli Manning. Peyton, of course, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2001, while Eli has been a finalist for the past couple of years.
Manning, entering his junior year after a challenging start last season, concluded strong with a resurgence in performance. He expressed his feelings about last year, saying, “I think I would have enjoyed it more. The first half of the season was frustrating for us. We weren’t playing well, and it wasn’t fun. Then, after a talk with the team, we decided we needed to enjoy the game.” Post that realization, Texas averaged 35 points per game and secured five wins in their last six games, crowned by a Citrus Bowl win against Michigan.
“If most kids had to go through what he did, 99 percent would have crumbled under the pressure, but Arch just grew stronger,” Sarkisian noted.
As Texas gears up for spring practice, they will kick off their season on September 5th against Texas State, which will serve as a precursor to a significant matchup against Ohio State the following week.
