Pirates’ Game Ends in Controversy

In the bottom of the 10th inning during Jake Magnum’s last at-bat against the Pirates on Thursday, a rather uncomfortable moment unfolded. A male fan captured on the broadcast was seen laughing and inappropriately touching his female companion.

This awkward exchange lasted a few seconds before the pair resumed their conversation.

Shortly after this incident was aired, Magnum, who had three singles in five at-bats, unfortunately hit into a game-ending double play, resulting in the Pirates falling 8-7 to the Nationals.

This outcome meant Pittsburgh had to settle for a series split, which was a letdown after a surprisingly strong start to the season. As of Friday, the Pirates stood tied for first in the American League Central Division, boasting an 11-8 record.

Their season began on a high note, winning six out of seven games, and they aimed to climb above .500 for the first time since 2018.

The game on Thursday was marred by errors; players Braxton Ashcraft, Nick Gonzalez, Nick York, and Connor Griffin each made critical mistakes, negating a strong offensive showing that included 15 hits and seven runs. The Nationals clinched the win when James Wood singled in the 10th inning.

Pirates manager Don Kelly remarked, “Our baseball is never pretty. We need to play better. But we fought, and they stayed in the game. There were many times we got away with it. That wasn’t the case today.”

Transforming the Pirates’ trajectory will take more than just an impressive start. They haven’t reached the postseason since they were a wild card team in 2015, and questions linger not about what ace Paul Skeens can contribute, but rather what they might gain if he ends up being traded.

On a more positive note, this season has seen some bright spots. The 19-year-old Griffin is making waves, Brandon Lowe has already hit seven home runs, and O’Neal Crews, despite a rocky opening night, has contributed five home runs.

Following the series against the Nationals, the Pirates will stay at PNC Park, where they are set to host the Rays in Friday’s opener, with Bubba Chandler taking the mound.
