Bryson DeChambeau expressed his frustrations during the LIV Golf tournament in Mexico City on Thursday.
After hitting a shot from a bunker onto the green, he was filmed commenting, “The grass is broken.” It seemed like he wasn’t too pleased with the conditions.
The golfer, who stirred up quite a bit of debate in the sport and missed last week’s Masters, questioned, “Oh, is this rough? You should definitely take a look.”
As he continued talking with his caddy and a rules official, DeChambeau remarked, “Guys, this looks like what we’re playing,” referring to the state of the turf. His tone carried a hint of sarcasm.
DeChambeau, a two-time U.S. Open champion who left the PGA Tour to join a competing league, showed visible frustration as he flipped his hand repeatedly. Still, he managed to hit his shot on the green and made the putt.
He ended the round tied for 29th with an even score of 71. While it wasn’t the best day for the 32-year-old, he’s recently enjoyed success, having won consecutive games in Singapore and South Africa after the Masters.
At Augusta National, though, things weren’t as smooth; he finished 6-over par, including a triple bogey on the final hole, marking his first missed cut since 2023.
Now that LIV Golf has resumed, financial worries seem to be lurking around. Reports indicate that the league may be facing funding issues, which prompted executives to hold an “emergency summit” in New York this week.
However, CEO Scott O’Neill reassured everyone that the league won’t be shutting down. He emphasized the commitment to continue operations “full throttle,” despite any rumors.
“I want to be clear: Our season will continue at full throttle, as scheduled, without interruption,” O’Neill stated in an email. He expressed confidence in their growing influence as they progress through the 2026 schedule.
Meanwhile, Victor Perez kicked off the tournament with an impressive 9 under par, leading by three strokes over Jon Rahm as they moved into Friday’s play.
