With just a few days until the 2026 NFL Draft, many prospects are eagerly awaiting the moment when their names will be announced, particularly during the first round on Thursday night.
Being labeled a “first round pick” is a significant milestone in the NFL; it suggests that a team sees immense potential in you. Greg Olsen, a three-time Pro Bowl tight end and current NFL analyst for Fox Sports, understands these dynamics all too well. He was drafted 31st overall by the Chicago Bears in 2007. Ultimately, it was the Bears who selected him, even though he hadn’t really engaged with their staff during the pre-draft activities.
Today’s prospects, like those preparing for next week’s draft, are bombarded with information—much more than what Olsen faced as a rookie. Fans, too, have access to extensive analysis and mock drafts via social media, which adds another layer of scrutiny and pressure.
“With everyone fixated on opinions from the outside, it’s easy to lose focus on the fundamentals,” Olsen reflected. He believes that adapting to this reality is tougher now than it was two decades ago. However, if players can maintain control over their mindset, they typically navigate their careers more smoothly.
Olsen anticipates that the upcoming draft day will be both complex and stressful for the draftees. Regardless of the challenges, he emphasized that for many, this moment signifies the realization of a lifelong dream. “When my name was called, it was a dream come true for me. I felt a rush of excitement, especially being picked by a storied franchise,” he shared.

After a 14-year NFL career, Olsen is now focusing on offering insightful analysis for Fox Sports broadcasts. He utilizes a platform called NFL IQ, developed in collaboration with Amazon Web Services, which assists him in understanding team needs and player analytics during the offseason.

This interactive tool not only enhances knowledge for casual spectators but also aids analysts like Olsen in making informed assessments during pivotal periods like the draft.
As Olsen put it, “This is potentially the most knowledgeable fan base we’ve ever seen in the NFL, which is exciting.” The availability of data similar to what teams use offers fans—and industry professionals like him—a deeper connection to the game.
