Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe Announce Separation
Olympic gold medalists Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe have decided to part ways after a decade-long relationship, sharing the news via a joint Instagram post on Friday.
“There’s really no easy way to share this,” their statement began. “After a lot of thought, we have agreed to separate as a couple.”
“This wasn’t a simple decision; we approached it with a great deal of love, respect, and care for each other. Over the last ten years, we’ve experienced both significant milestones and quieter moments, and those memories will always stay with us.”
They expressed gratitude for the support they’ve received from their community, remarking that many have shown the importance of living authentically. “We’re so thankful for this amazing community for embracing us and for who we are,” they added. “You’ve continuously reminded us why it’s important to love out loud.”
In addition, the duo discussed the conclusion of their podcast, “A Touch More.” “It’s been an incredible joy to create this podcast and foster connections. While this chapter is ending, what we’ve built with you isn’t going anywhere.” They thanked their audience, noting that the support means a lot to them.
Bird and Rapinoe first crossed paths at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where Rapinoe played for Seattle Reign during their NWSL stint, while Bird was with the WNBA’s Seattle Storm. They publicly acknowledged their relationship in July 2017 and got engaged in October 2020.
They initially launched their podcast on Instagram amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Additionally, they are executive producers on an upcoming series titled “Playing the Field,” which is based on the USA Today sports romance novel “Cleat Cute” by Merrill Wilsner. The show is described as an ensemble comedy focusing on the lively and tumultuous lives of four female players on a professional women’s soccer team in New Orleans, revolving around the complicated romance of a newly drafted player and the team’s captain.
Looking ahead, Bird is set to work with NBC and Peacock as a studio analyst for the upcoming 2026 WNBA season.
