Parent company of QVC and HSN seeks bankruptcy protection and aims for quick debt restructuring

The QVC Group, which operates well-known shopping channels such as QVC and HSN, has initiated Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas. In a press release, the company stated that it is seeking a Reorganization Support Agreement (RSA) to significantly reduce its debt from $6.6 billion to approximately $1.3 billion.

The goal is to emerge from bankruptcy within 90 days, which is, I suppose, a pretty ambitious timeframe. The company claims to have enough liquidity for operations and assures that all vendors, suppliers, and general unsecured creditors will be fully paid, according to the press release.

Interestingly, the QVC Group is not planning on any layoffs or furloughs during this time and expects its operations to continue as normal. Despite being mainstays on late-night cable, QVC and HSN recognize that the rise of social media shopping has necessitated changes to their business strategies.

David Rawlinson, the President and CEO of QVC Group, expressed confidence in the company’s recovery prospects, emphasizing the progress that has been made so far.

The company is targeting live social shopping and claims to have seen early success with its new WIN growth strategy. Rawlinson pointed out that over the last year, QVC has become a leading seller on TikTok Shop in the U.S., all while expanding its presence across various streaming platforms. To adapt to the shifting market, the company has combined its operations between HSN and QVC, partnered with key social and media players, and adjusted its sourcing strategies.

It’s worth noting that QVC was purchased by billionaire John Malone in 2003 for $7.9 billion and subsequently acquired HSN in 2017 for $2.1 billion. The future of the brands is, well, certainly uncertain, but there’s a sense of hope amid these challenges.
