Elmo learns Arabic on 'Sesame Street': 'What does salam alaykum mean?'

“Sesame Street” dedicated some of its recent content to celebrating Arabic culture. In a colorful video, the show acknowledged “Arab American Heritage Month” and introduced the word of the day: “Habibi.” This term, commonly used to express affection and often translated as “dear,” appeared both in the video and on social media, with Elmo engaging in a lesson on Arabic.

Comedian Ramy Youssef, who has Egyptian roots, joined Elmo in a sketch. He opened with a greeting: “Salaam alaikum, everyone,” which prompted curiosity from the Muppets.

The Muppets asked, “Mr. Rami, what does salaam alaikum mean?”

Youssef explained, “Salam means peace, and it’s a way to greet.” Elmo enthusiastically repeated the greeting, wishing viewers a happy Arab American Heritage Month.

Together, they shared additional Arabic words for their audience to learn.

This engaging content on TikTok received 1.2 million views, where Youssef expressed pride in his Arab heritage, saying he felt grateful to share it with Elmo and fellow Arabs during this month. Elmo, who speaks Arabic, asked again about “Habibi,” to which Youssef clarified it meant “special friend.”

Elmo responded warmly, “Happy Arab American Heritage Month, Habibi. We love you.”

It’s worth noting that if this type of content hadn’t been integrated into “Sesame Street” over recent years, viewers might have found it more surprising.

The show has consistently embraced progressive themes aimed at children, extending even into gender discussions.

In past initiatives, “Sesame Street” has addressed topics like LGBTQ+ representation, introducing children to gay and lesbian parents. They also highlighted non-binary identities through individuals like Jonathan Van Ness.

Youssef, known to identify as Muslim, is married to a Saudi woman.
