Bride covered in black paint as sister-in-law's attacker receives sentence for offense

Wedding Day Attack Leaves Bride Struggling with Mental Health

A bride in the UK is facing a tough battle with depression and has been unable to work for nearly two years following an unexpected incident just before her wedding. Gemma Monk, 35, was doused in black paint by her sister-in-law, Antonia Eastwood, amid an ongoing feud. The attack occurred moments before she was set to marry her long-time partner, Ken Monk, in May 2024.

While walking down a cream carpet with her father at a venue in Maidstone, Gemma heard someone call her name. Almost immediately, black paint splashed onto her. Realizing who the assailant was, she attempted to confront Eastwood, but the sister-in-law managed to evade capture. This led to an emotional outburst for the bride.

“This has had a dramatic impact on my life,” Gemma shared, expressing her distress after Eastwood was found guilty of criminal damage. “Even talking about it brings me to tears.” She went on to mention that she struggles to get out of bed unless it’s for her children, feeling as if she lost her dignity and sense of self on what was supposed to be the happiest day of her life.

In a twist of fate, this attack happened after Gemma had been dealing with health issues, including a cancer scare. She felt that Eastwood, knowing her struggles, chose to ruin the most significant day of her life. The feud appears to have roots in past family dynamics, including a history of tensions involving her now-husband.

In court, Eastwood received a 10-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, along with 160 hours of community service. The judge commented on how the attack had tainted what should have been a joyful occasion for Gemma and her family.

Remarkably, despite the chaotic start to her wedding day, Gemma cleaned herself off and borrowed a dress to still go through with the ceremony. “We’ve waited so long for this day. Nothing was going to stop me,” she declared, emphasizing her determination to marry her partner after over two decades together.

However, the emotional aftermath has left her in a persistent state of distress. She indicated that her initial instincts about something being wrong on her wedding day were unfortunately validated, and she expressed strong feelings of anger towards Eastwood, stating she would never accept her apology. Gemma even felt the court’s response was too lenient, suggesting a longer sentence was warranted given the circumstances.

This entire ordeal has shifted her perspective on life significantly, leaving her questioning her own actions in the aftermath. Plans for a honeymoon were also scratched as she just didn’t feel up for it anymore, showcasing the deep impact of the attack on her mental well-being.
