Porter’s Prospects Rise After Swalwell Withdraws
Emily’s List, known for its pro-abortion stance, has previously backed presidential candidates like Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris. Now, Katie Porter, often seen as a disciple of Elizabeth Warren, seems likely to benefit the most from Eric Swalwell’s exit from the race.
According to a memo, Porter stated, “We’ve gained a lot of momentum in the second half,” asserting her readiness for the current political climate. Following Swalwell’s departure, Porter described herself as offering “the strongest path to victory in California,” emphasizing the need for the state’s first female governor.
The memo indicates that 46% of Swalwell’s supporters view Porter as their second choice, while only 14% favor Tom Steyer and 9% for Xavier Becerra. The memo notes a lack of support from Republicans for any of these candidates. Emily’s List believes Porter is nearly tied with Steyer in what they refer to as a “two-way Democratic race” and suggests she has a clear advantage as voting approaches.
Additionally, the memo claims that Porter is uniquely positioned to challenge what they characterize as “disastrous and dangerous policies” from the Trump administration. It highlights that she is the only candidate without billionaire backing or corporate PAC donations, contrasting her with Steyer, whom they label as an unrelated billionaire seeking power for himself. The memo concludes by suggesting that uniting around Porter could help the Democratic Party recover from a seemingly precarious situation.
However, Breitbart News has questioned Emily’s List’s past electoral records, pointing out challenges they faced in various races, including governor and Congress. They noted that in 2016, despite shifting focus away from promoting herself as the first female president, Clinton mobilized female voters, claiming, “President Hillary Clinton will make the best choice for this country.” Later, she spearheaded a multi-million dollar initiative to support Kamala Harris in preparation for the 2024 election.
It’s worth noting that Emily’s List hasn’t commented on how voters might respond to Porter’s tumultuous personal and professional history. For instance, in past campaigns, she advocated for stringent gun control measures, aiming for nationwide implementation of California’s laws, and supported legislation requiring background checks for all gun sales.
In discussions about women’s sports, Porter indicated that decisions regarding transgender athletes should be left to sports organizations. This was highlighted during a 2023 TV appearance, where she suggested that reactions from figures like swimmer Riley Gaines, who raised concerns about competing against transgender athletes, were driven by a desire for attention.
On immigration, Porter acknowledged tragic incidents involving crimes committed by illegal aliens, stating that while they were important to recognize, such cases shouldn’t dictate overall immigration policy. About abortion, she maintained that a woman’s right to control her body is fundamental for achieving social and economic equality.
Ironically, her statements on rights seem juxtaposed against more significant issues; she has warned Republicans against encroaching on women’s health decisions, predicting that contraceptive access could become endangered in the future.
Porter’s conduct has also come under scrutiny. Following allegations by former colleagues about her management style and treatment of others, she faced multiple accusations. In late 2022, she reportedly had a contentious interaction with a former fellow in her office amid a dispute over COVID-19 protocols. Moreover, her comments in a private conversation, such as dismissing a colleague’s concerns about a friend’s tragic death by emphasizing her own family’s needs, sparked controversy.
There were also resurfaced clips showing her shouting at staff during meetings and threatening to cut off interviews. While Porter later expressed sorrow over her approach, these episodes paint a picture of a challenging workplace environment.
Recent legal documents from her divorce proceedings indicate further complexities. Porter’s ex-husband accused her of physical abuse, with allegations of incidents involving hot food and kitchen items. Conversely, she suggested that any violence occurred after their separation.
In 2024, Porter sought a restraining order against an ex-boyfriend, claiming a pattern of harassment and safety threats, though he insisted her motives were self-serving. This complicated narrative adds layers to her candidacy as she moves forward in her political ambitions.
