Irish cartel leader Daniel Kinahan detained in Dubai on charges of organized crime

International Fugitive Arrested in Dubai

This week, an international fugitive was apprehended in Dubai following a lengthy investigation.

Daniel Kinahan, reportedly the head of the Kinahan Cartel, which is one of the largest criminal groups in Ireland, was detained on Wednesday on organized crime charges. This operation was carried out in collaboration between Irish and United Arab Emirates authorities.

The 48-year-old Kinahan is set to face charges in Ireland linked to an ongoing gang war that has claimed 18 lives since 2015, involving his cartel and the rival Hutch gang.

Dubai Police, while not naming Kinahan, did confirm they arrested an Irish fugitive believed to be connected with an organized crime network involved in serious offenses in his home country.

As per Irish media reports, it was confirmed on Friday that Kinahan was the suspect in custody.

The Garda Síochána, which is the National Police of Ireland, indicated that the arrested individual was in his 40s and had been captured under an Irish court warrant. They emphasized their commitment to pursuing individuals involved in serious organized crime, regardless of where they might be located, stating that these arrests highlight the importance of international cooperation in combatting transnational crime.

Having fled Ireland for Spain and subsequently the UAE, Kinahan had previously been targeted in an assassination attempt that resulted in the death of a cartel associate during a boxing event at the Regency Hotel in Dublin.

In 2022, the U.S. Treasury even placed a $5 million bounty for information leading to the arrest of Kinahan’s cartel leaders or for crippling the cartel financially.

The Kinahan organization is a significant player in the European drug trade and, along with other criminal groups, forms a “super cartel” that controls around one-third of the cocaine market in Europe.

Interestingly, Kinahan has also made his mark in the boxing industry as the founder of a management company, MTK Global.
