Obama Encourages Virginia Vote on Redistricting
Former President Barack Obama is calling on Virginians to support a redistricting initiative that could significantly aid Democrats in the upcoming midterm elections.
In a recent video, Obama stated, “By voting yes, we have a chance to do something important not only for our commonwealth but for our entire country. By voting yes, you can push back against Republicans who are trying to gain an unfair advantage in the midterm elections.”
This appeal was made just before the final day of early voting, ahead of Tuesday’s statewide referendum. If approved, the measure would temporarily transfer redistricting power to the Democratic-controlled Congress instead of the current bipartisan commission until the 2030 election. The Democrats could potentially expand their representation in Virginia’s House of Representatives from a narrow 6-5 edge to 10-1.
Democrats are hoping to gain four additional left-leaning House seats in this midterm battle. Obama reinforced the urgency of the vote by asserting, “By voting yes, you can take a temporary step toward leveling the playing field. We’re counting on you.”
In response, Republicans have denounced these redistricting efforts as an “unconstitutional power grab.” Democrats argue that this is a necessary action to address partisan gerrymandering already enacted by Republicans in other states.
Obama’s video is part of a broader campaign related to the referendum. He had previously appeared in an advertisement released by Virginians for Fair Elections, a Democratic organization advocating for ballot initiatives.
On the opposing side, Virginia’s Republican group, Virginians for Fair Map, has leveraged Obama’s prior remarks on gerrymandering against the referendum. A recent mail campaign against the initiative featured a photo of Obama alongside a quote from six years ago regarding the harmful impact of gerrymandering on American democracy.
Supporters of the redistricting measure have accused their rivals of significantly outspending them. However, early polling indicates that support for the initiative is only slightly ahead of opposition, amidst growing early voting activity.
Virginia has emerged as a critical battleground in the ongoing struggle over congressional redistricting, a fight that President Trump has intensified since Democrats regained control of the House in the 2018 midterms. His fixation on reshaping congressional maps in Republican-leaning states aims to bolster his party’s weakening hold on the House.
Overall, the current political climate surrounding redistricting is complex and ever-evolving, with significant implications for both parties in the upcoming elections.
