DeChambeau Unhappy with Course Conditions at LIV Golf Mexico City
Bryson DeChambeau, the two-time U.S. Open champion, expressed disappointment with the condition of Club de Golf Chapultepec as he participated in the LIV Golf event in Mexico City. Questions loom over his funding beyond this season, adding stress to his game.
On the 16th hole, after hitting a bunker shot, he found himself in an unfortunate patch devoid of grass. “The grass was destroyed,” he remarked. “Oh, is this hard? Sure. I’m glad to see it,” he added with noticeable frustration.
DeChambeau waited for rules officials as he prepared for his next move. Previous complaints about the course led him to call it “the worst bunker ever” last year, suggesting ongoing issues with the layout.
His second round ended in an even score, mirroring the day before. This came on the heels of his missing qualification for the Masters—a stark contrast to the previous year when he found himself in the final group alongside Rory McIlroy.
Amidst all this, LIV Golf is facing uncertainty regarding its funding, with CEO Scott O’Neill confirming that support from Saudi Arabia will end after the season. “We work like crazy to create a business plan to stay afloat,” he stated. The company is looking at possible structural changes moving forward.
O’Neill seemed optimistic, mentioning that if revenue growth continues, LIV Golf could become sustainable long-term. Meanwhile, Jon Rahm currently leads the tournament at 10 under, with his team significantly ahead of the competition.
