Shooting Incident in Kiev Supermarket

A shooting in a Kiev supermarket resulted in the deaths of six people and injured 14 others, including a 12-year-old boy. The incident unfolded on Saturday when a 58-year-old gunman, who had long been a resident of the Donetsk region and was originally from Moscow, opened fire. This information came from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Interior Minister Ihor Klimenko.

According to Zelensky, the shooter took at least four hostages, killing one and injuring the other four victims. Sadly, another woman succumbed to her injuries in the hospital.

Witnesses recorded harrowing footage of the gunman shooting at close range on the street, with several bodies discovered on the sidewalk and in the courtyard.

Klimenko reported that Ukrainian special forces intervened after negotiations with the gunman failed, taking about 40 minutes. The number of injured could still rise as some individuals are still seeking medical attention.

Kyiv’s Mayor Vitali Klitschko noted that the injured included the young boy and a security guard from the supermarket.

Before the supermarket attack, the shooter is said to have set fire to an apartment, although it’s unclear if there were any injuries from that incident.

In a message posted on X, Zelensky extended his condolences to the victims’ families, expressing his hope for a swift recovery for the injured.

Authorities revealed that the assailant had a previous criminal charge and was in possession of a valid weapons license. Investigations are currently underway by the State Police and the Security Service of Ukraine.

Describing the gunman, a neighbor, Hannah Kulik, 75, mentioned that he seemed educated and sophisticated, living alone and appearing to be somewhat reclusive. “I would never think he was some sort of criminal,” she stated.

The attack has been classified as an act of terrorism, and authorities are diligently examining all available information regarding the perpetrator and his motivations.
