Ex-Australian soldier Ben Roberts Smith addresses claims of war crimes in Afghanistan

Australia’s most honored soldier, who faces charges related to war crimes during his time in Afghanistan over a decade ago, publicly repudiated the allegations against him on Sunday, emphasizing his pride in his military service.

Ben Roberts-Smith, 47, recently released on bail, is facing five war crime charges for the alleged killing of five unarmed Afghan civilians between 2009 and 2012.

Each charge could lead to a life sentence.

The former Special Air Service corporal has repeatedly contested the allegations, many of which originally surfaced in a series of articles by Nine Entertainment beginning in 2018.

Speaking to reporters on Queensland’s Gold Coast, Roberts-Smith insisted he always adhered to the rules of engagement in Afghanistan.

“While I categorically deny all these allegations and had hoped not to be charged, I intend to use this opportunity to finally clear my name,” he remarked. “I am proud of my service in Afghanistan.”

After spending over a week in custody, Roberts-Smith was granted bail, with a judge indicating that it could take several years before the case reaches court.

Prosecutors had raised concerns regarding bail, fearing he might attempt to contact witnesses.

According to police, the individuals Roberts-Smith is accused of killing were not engaged in hostilities at the time and were allegedly restrained, unarmed, and in Australian military custody when they died.

In 2023, Roberts-Smith faced a defamation ruling which concluded that he was involved in the murder of four Afghan civilians.
