Exploring In-N-Out's training center aimed at shaping future leaders of the fast-food chain

In-N-Out Burger’s Unique Training Program

There’s more to one beloved fast-food chain than just serving burgers: In-N-Out Burger has its own training institution.

Located in Baldwin Park, California, close to where it all began, this facility—known as In-N-Out University—focuses on training employees aiming for management roles.

Now, unlike conventional universities, this program doesn’t offer any degrees. Its primary aim is to educate staff on running a restaurant, keeping things clean, and delivering excellent customer service.

This training isn’t accessible to everyone. Employees need to either climb the ranks from within the company or apply for management roles to participate, as highlighted in a recent article.

Interestingly, the roots of this training initiative trace back to the company’s early expansion strategies.

Founded in 1948 by Harry and Esther Snyder, In-N-Out was California’s first drive-thru hamburger restaurant, tucked away in Baldwin Park. The original establishment was just over 100 square feet and prioritized fresh ingredients and made-to-order meals.

Afterward, the chain flourished under the guidance of Rich Snyder, Harry’s son, who emphasized structured training as they expanded in the 1970s.

Rich Snyder envisioned a formal management training program near the original restaurant to ensure new locations were prepared with knowledgeable leadership.

In fact, the dedicated building for In-N-Out University opened its doors in 1984, replacing the Snyder family’s former residence.

The commitment to training has played a crucial role in the brand’s growth journey.

From that small drive-thru, In-N-Out has blossomed into a chain boasting over 400 locations across several states—all while keeping a policy of promoting from within the company.

The grounds in Baldwin Park also showcase a replica of the first restaurant and a company store, offering visitors insights into the chain’s past. However, it’s worth noting the university itself isn’t publicly accessible just yet.

Interestingly, other fast-food giants are also recognizing the importance of training programs to foster employee development and future managers.

For instance, McDonald’s boasts its own global training center called Hamburger University, focusing on critical aspects of restaurant operations like quality, service, and cleanliness. The program is designed to empower employees with the skills needed for management roles.
