Obama’s film studio is said to be departing from Netflix to become independent.

Michelle Obama would oppose her husband's potential third term.

Former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama’s production company, Higher Ground, is reportedly departing from Netflix later this year. The current first-look agreement they have with the streaming service is set to conclude, and sources suggest that instead of renewing, the Obamas intend to “move toward independence.”

While the details of the deal are not entirely settled, it seems that Higher Ground plans to maintain its independence, ultimately not pursuing a new studio agreement but will continue collaborating with Netflix on ongoing projects.

This shift comes after the Obamas initially celebrated a multi-year deal with Netflix back in 2018. That arrangement was facilitated by Ted Sarandos, who played a role in President Obama’s 2012 campaign as a fundraiser.

According to Netflix’s chief content officer, Bela Bajaria, since their partnership began, the Obamas have focused on extraordinary storytelling that captures the human experience. She expressed excitement about continuing the relationship as Higher Ground develops new, ambitious content.

Interestingly, Obama hinted at their next moves during a special program called History Talk on the History Channel. He mentioned that their collaboration with Netflix might not last indefinitely, hinting at their future plans.

Overall, it appears the Obamas are looking to chart their own path in the film industry after a successful run with Netflix, leading to a mix of anticipation and curiosity about their upcoming projects.
