Jets Prepare for Draft After Tough Season
The Jets find themselves once again in a prime drafting position following a disappointing first season under head coach Aaron Glenn. With Fernando Mendoza, the standout QB prospect, likely to be released before the No. 2 pick, it seems the Jets are gearing up for a familiar face: Geno Smith, at least until a more promising QB class emerges next year. For now, all eyes are on which of the two EDGE defenders they might select to bolster their defense.
Glenn, previously the defensive coordinator for the Lions and a former Pro Bowl cornerback, is tasked with improving a defense that ranked a dismal 31st in terms of points allowed per game, averaging 29.6 points and failing to secure a single interception. The Jets have brought in safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and linebacker Kingsley Enegbare, but they still need more talent and will likely look to add cornerstone players who can elevate those around them.
One strong candidate is Arbel Reese, who is favored to be the first non-quarterback chosen on draft night. Reese has attributes that could see him transition quickly to the professional level, either as an edge rusher or an off-ball linebacker. His speed and agility make him adept at closing in on receivers, along with a talent for pass rushing. He excelled on a historically strong Ohio State defense last season, earning first-team All-American honors and being a finalist for the prestigious Butkus Award, although his success will largely depend on finding a scheme that maximizes his skills.
Leith could be the immediate game changer Glenn seeks to redefine the defense’s identity.
Another notable option is David Bailey, who, while seen as a solid defensive prospect, has seen his chances of being selected No. 2 diminish recently. Known for his explosive start and ability to disrupt plays, Bailey has made a name for himself during his three years at Stanford. He then transferred to Texas Tech, where he quickly became a first-team All-American and a finalist for the Lombardi Award, tallying 14.5 sacks and 19.5 tackles for loss.
It’s possible that Glenn views Bailey as a key asset that could shape the defense for years to come.
Possible Trade Scenarios
If the Jets opt to trade the No. 2 pick, they might look to acquire a unique playmaker like Reese or his teammate, Sonny Styles. Styles, who has switched from safety to linebacker, is also on the radar for teams looking for a versatile player.
Another intriguing target could be Reuben Bain Jr., who has made headlines recently due to a tragic car accident but has also shown a potential game-changing impact in the College Football Playoff. There are also whispers about Jeremiah Love from Notre Dame, whose college footage is reminiscent of Bejan Robinson, though he stands slightly taller and has quickened sprint times. Lastly, Ty Simpson, though considered a reach, might attract a desperate team in search of a QB, but predictions suggest he may fall past the Jets’ next selection at No. 16.
