Uncertainty Surrounds Steve Kerr’s Future with the Warriors

While no decisions have been made regarding Steve Kerr’s future as head coach of the Warriors, Draymond Green seems convinced it may be time to move on.

“I hope he’s our coach next year,” Green mentioned, but added, “If you want my opinion, I don’t think so.”

Green expressed his thoughts during a recent episode of his podcast, “The Draymond Green Show,” following the Warriors’ exit from the play-in tournament. He reflected on a poignant moment shared with Kerr and Stephen Curry late in their loss against the Suns, where Kerr embraced both players, highlighting their long-standing relationship over twelve seasons that included multiple NBA Finals and championship wins.

If Green’s intuition is correct, it could mark a bittersweet ending for this trio.

“I’m glad we got to share that moment. (Kerr) didn’t miss that moment. It was a big deal,” Green recalled. “I felt like that was it… If that’s the case, what a great run it was.”

Although the moment felt intimate, Kerr conveyed his uncertainty about the future during this exchange, which was actually caught on a Prime Video microphone. “I don’t know what’s going to happen next, but I love you all to death,” he told the pair.

With Kerr’s contract expired after the season, he is technically a free agent. He chose not to sign an extension and later indicated that he has two possible paths: either sign Curry and Green to long-term deals or step away from coaching entirely.

“I definitely have no intention of going and coaching somewhere else next year,” Kerr stated, noting he would take “a week or two” to evaluate his options and have discussions with general managers Mike Dunleavy Jr. and Joe Lacob to reach a decision.

“You never know what’s going to happen. I still love coaching, but I also understand that all of these jobs have an expiration date,” he added. “Sometimes you need new ideas. If that’s the case, I can’t help but be grateful for the incredible opportunity to coach this franchise and work with players like Stephen Curry and Draymond.”

Kerr has a commendable record of 604 wins and 353 losses during the regular season and has added 104 postseason victories over his twelve years with the franchise. The only coach Curry and Green have known besides Kerr is Mark Jackson, who departed after their 2014 playoff exit.

“I’ve never felt so anxious about what’s going to happen next since the beginning of my career,” Green admitted. “I really don’t know which way it’s headed… I’ve been really lucky to have Steve as my coach for twelve years. We’ve got to brace ourselves for whatever comes our way.”
