Sen. Cory Booker Urges Democrats to Unite at Michigan Convention

At the Michigan Democratic Party convention, Sen. Cory Booker (D.N.J.) delivered an impassioned speech, characterized by a mix of passionate shouts and expressive hand gestures. He called on Democrats to act as “foot soldiers for democracy,” highlighting a perceived sense of urgency as he warned about the “darkness and wind” affecting the nation.

Booker was among several notable leaders attending the convention, alongside former Vice President Kamala Harris and Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear. Each has been mentioned as a possible candidate for the 2028 presidential race.

For around 25 minutes, Booker spoke with a rhythm that echoed poetry, raising his voice at times to engage the audience more effectively.

“Ladies and gentlemen, there is a storm upon our country,” he declared toward the conclusion of his address. “Darkness and wind are blowing. People are hurting. We don’t need someone from above; we need foot soldiers of democracy ready to stand up in tough times.”

He emphasized the need for Democrats to “reclaim the American dream,” asking, “Do you support our democracy? Do you vote? Do you stand up for our children and elders?” He encouraged unity, saying, “We are the Democratic Party. It’s time for a new deal.”

Reflecting on his previous presidential campaign in 2020, Booker sought to connect with Michigan voters, sharing insights about his political journey and family connections to the state.

At one point in his speech, Booker criticized the reasoning behind past voter abstention, alluding to a regretful statement made by Clinton and Harris. He remarked, “You might disagree with 10 percent of her opinions, but then you’re putting someone in office with whom you disagree on everything.” He lamented that voters had supported people who “locked up our children” and “took away our health care” instead of aligning with Democratic values.

Booker went on to urge Michigan Democrats to change the state’s identifying gesture from “Michigan’s hand” to “Michigan’s fist,” urging them to unite and confront challenges head-on.

Former MSNBC commentator Mehdi Hasan, however, countered Booker’s assertion that the responsibility for Democratic losses lies with voters, suggesting his perspective distracts from the party’s own platform issues.

In response to Booker’s fervor, some critics expressed skepticism over his tone, and America First Works, a nonprofit organization, quipped, “Calm down, Spartacus,” highlighting the theatrical nature of his speech.
