Billy Strings Breaks Leg in Skateboarding Accident
Bluegrass musician Billy Strings shared that he sustained a leg injury in a “freaky” incident just before heading into the encore at a packed concert in Virginia on Saturday. As a result, he has postponed several upcoming shows while he recuperates.
The Grammy Award-winning artist, whose real name is William Apostle, reflected humorously on the mishap. He noted, “Well, I can’t say y’all didn’t warn me about being naughty with a skateboard!!”
Apostle mentioned that part of his routine after performing often includes a quick skateboard ride backstage. During a recent concert in Charlottesville, feeling quite “elated,” he attempted a backside 180—which is a trick where a skateboarder rotates their body and board.
Despite having successfully executed the trick many times before, he acknowledged that he “landed awkwardly.” An X-ray he shared revealed the injury was significant enough to necessitate a full foot cast and bone screws.
Fortunately, Charlottesville is home to the University of Virginia, known for its excellent medical program. He expressed gratitude for the medical staff, saying, “I’m all back together,” and mentioned being free from a “crazy ketamine trip.”
However, his serious injury has caused complications for the ongoing tour. The 33-year-old artist is now rescheduling his remaining April shows—one in Charleston, West Virginia, and three in Fishers, Indiana—to August.
Coming from Lansing, Michigan, Billy Strings has achieved much in his career, winning three Grammy Awards, all for Best Bluegrass Album. He has collaborated with various notable artists across different music genres, including rapper Post Malone and country legend Willie Nelson.
