Victor Wembanyama is named the first unanimous Defensive Player of the Year

Wembanyama Makes NBA History

On Monday, Victor Wembanyama etched his name into NBA history by becoming the first player ever to be named the unanimous Defensive Player of the Year.

The San Antonio Spurs center outperformed Oklahoma City’s Chet Holmgren and Detroit’s Orser Thompson, securing all 100 first-place votes from the media panel responsible for this year’s league awards.

Interestingly, Wembanyama is now the youngest recipient of this award since its inception after the 1982-83 season. Given the significant contributions he made to the Spurs’ defense during the regular season, many saw his win as well-deserved.

Averaging an impressive 3.1 blocks per game over 64 games, opponents managed to shoot just 40.7 percent against the 7-foot-4 standout. To add to this, he notched 66 steals, and his defensive rating of 110.4 ranked second-best in the league.

“Everything he’s achieved is earned, never given,” said teammate Keldon Johnson. “He’s one of the hardest-working people I’ve ever met and takes his craft very seriously. This is just a glimpse of what’s ahead for Victor. He’s not just a special player on the court; he’s even more remarkable off the court.”

Wembanyama’s victory also marks the first time a Spurs player has claimed the Defensive Player of the Year award since Kawhi Leonard took it home in consecutive years, 2014 and 2015.

In addition to this accolade, he is a finalist for the MVP award, competing against Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Nikola Jokic.

The Spurs are currently engaged in a first-round playoff series against the Trail Blazers, having claimed a 111-98 victory in Game 1, leading the series 1-0. The next game is set for Tuesday in San Antonio.
