Rising Star Caleb Downs Poised for NFL Success
Caleb Downs, a prominent safety from Ohio State University, is set to follow in the footsteps of his family members by joining the NFL. There’s a strong likelihood that he will be among the first players selected during the NFL Draft this Thursday.
His father, Gary Downs, a running back, was drafted by the New York Giants in the third round of the 1994 NFL Draft after playing at North Carolina State University. Gary spent six years in the league, playing for the Giants, the Atlanta Falcons, and the Denver Broncos before retiring in 2000.
Meanwhile, Caleb’s older brother, Josh Downs, 24, is already making waves as a receiver for the Indianapolis Colts after being picked in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft from UNC. Additionally, former NFL cornerback Dre Bly, who had an impressive 11-year career, is Caleb’s uncle.
As Caleb anticipates his potential selection, he reflects on the influence his family has had on him, especially as he makes the transition to professional football. Although both his father and brother have NFL backgrounds, he points to his grandfather, Gary Downs Sr., a 23-year U.S. Army veteran, as the one who truly shaped his upbringing.
“The lessons my grandfather instilled in us—consistency, discipline, hard work—are what brought us to this moment,” Caleb remarked. He also highlighted his partnership with USAA, noted for its “Salute to Service” initiatives.
Caleb reminisced about childhood moments—like watching his dad race his uncle—that fueled his competitive spirit. “Those memories stick with you,” he said, adding that they’ve been pivotal in his journey.
Growing up, he didn’t fully grasp the significance of his grandfather’s role as a “jumpmaster” in the Army, but he gained a deeper understanding as he matured both as a person and as a football player. Even after retiring from the military in 1998, his grandfather’s principles continued to guide his family members.
When discussing the impact of his grandfather, Caleb emphasized, “It’s all in how my dad led our family.” He expressed hope that the same values would be passed down to his future family.
While Caleb navigates the uncertainties of his NFL future, he can lean on his brother Josh for insights on making a swift adjustment to the league. “Finding a routine is key,” Caleb shared, noting that this is something he needs to work on quickly.
Excitement blends with a bit of playful rivalry as Caleb hopes for a chance to compete with Josh on the field. Reflecting on their previous encounter in high school, he chuckled, “Yeah, it’s been discussed. I definitely remember our game. He lost badly when he was a freshman, so he’s looking for redemption.”
As Caleb prepares for this new chapter, he finds strength in his family legacy, drawing inspiration and wisdom from those around him. His recent experience visiting the Disabled American Veterans Branch with his grandfather proved to be particularly meaningful.
“Hearing their stories and learning from their experiences was invaluable,” he shared. “Being with accomplished individuals from various backgrounds is something I truly cherish.”
Caleb is looking ahead with optimism, ready to embrace the challenges of the NFL while cherishing his family’s profound influence on his journey.
