Fernando Mendoza explains his decision to sit out the 2026 NFL Draft

Fernando Mendoza to Skip NFL Draft for Family Reasons

This year’s NFL Draft will mark the first time since 2021 that there won’t be a standout player in attendance, as Fernando Mendoza chose to forgo the photo op with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in Pittsburgh.

“Pittsburgh is an amazing venue, and I’m genuinely looking forward to seeing everyone take that walk across the stage on Thursday night,” Mendoza shared during an appearance on “The Rich Eisen Show” this past Monday.

He added, “My parents really preferred to do this at home, and honestly, so did I. It simplifies things for us, especially given our family dynamics. We’ll be catching a morning flight anyway, so staying home seems like a better option.”

Mendoza’s mother has been living with multiple sclerosis for the past 15 years, which has impacted her mobility, making it easier for their family to stay close during this significant moment.

“I wanted to stay here and create lasting memories with everyone who has supported my soccer career,” he explained. “It’s not just about having a few people from Pittsburgh around; I want to share this with everyone who means a lot to me. Those will undoubtedly be some of my best memories.”

Cameras will be following him as he awaits the announcement of being picked first overall by the Las Vegas Raiders. Mendoza’s plan is to watch the draft from Miami, surrounded by friends and family.

“I definitely want to be the best team player I can be, and I’m prepared to work with ESPN for whatever they need,” he stated. “However, it’s crucial for me to start this journey with all the people who have supported me.”

Having attended Christopher Columbus High School in Miami, Mendoza was considered a two- or three-star recruit, depending on the source. He spent a couple of seasons playing in California before transferring to Indiana, where he had an explosive 2025 season, winning both the Heisman Trophy and a national championship.

Since he won’t be at the NFL Draft, Mendoza’s media appearances are likely to be rescheduled until Friday. On that day, he will head to Las Vegas for a photo session in his jersey and to answer questions.
