Washington D.C. Officer Accused in Child Solicitation Case

A police officer from Washington, D.C., who is recognized as the first openly gay union president, faces serious allegations of attempting to groom what he believed to be a teenage boy for sexual purposes.

Lieutenant Matthew Mahr, 47, has been charged with solicitation of child pornography and two counts of sexual solicitation of a minor, according to reports from a news outlet.

Mahr reportedly communicated with someone he thought was a 15-year-old boy named Nate through a Reddit community focused on relationships between older and younger individuals.

During these exchanges, Mahr is said to have sent sexually explicit messages and nude photographs to an individual who turned out to be an undercover detective.

In his communication, Mahr shared personal information, including a phone number, which led to his identification as a suspect by local law enforcement.

Documents reveal a particularly disturbing interaction where Mahr expressed a desire for a future date, indicating it was the boy’s upcoming 16th birthday—the age of consent in Maryland.

As the conversation progressed, Mahr allegedly sent several explicit images and requested the undercover detective, posing as a minor, to send similar photographs of himself.

The two had arranged to meet in Abingdon, Maryland, but Mahr was arrested when he arrived at the designated location.

Following his arrest, the Metropolitan Police Department issued a statement describing the allegations as deeply troubling and contrary to the department’s values, adding that they would conduct an internal investigation after the criminal inquiry. Mahr was reportedly on vacation at the time of his arrest.

It has been noted that Mahr had previously faced disciplinary action in 2013 when he was stripped of his gun and badge due to undisclosed charges while serving as a supervisor in the Police Department’s Gay and Lesbian Liaison Unit.

Moreover, Mahr previously worked as a special operations officer responsible for security for high-profile officials, including President Trump.

The issue of child pornography has gained significant attention, with authorities highlighting the role of the internet in facilitating such exploitation. The U.S. Justice Department notes that the growth of technology has made child pornography more accessible online, creating networks that promote these crimes, which pose serious risks to children nationwide.
