Sophie Cunningham Clarifies Contract Concerns

Sophie Cunningham expressed her dissatisfaction with her recent contract with the Indiana Fever, though it wasn’t quite as expected. After signing a one-year deal worth $665,000, her remarks on the “Show Me Something” podcast gained attention, suggesting she was aiming for a better contract under the league’s new CBA.

However, she quickly clarified on X that her issue was less about the monetary aspect and more about the contract’s length—a point she reiterated this past Tuesday.

“I’ve been wanting to be somewhere for more than a year. I’m 30 years old, and I want to own a house and get established,” she explained to reporters.

“I really enjoyed my time in Indiana. When you find a team that reignites your passion for basketball, both on and off the court, you want to keep that going. That was the essence of what I meant,” she added.

Cunningham, who ended the 2025 season with a torn MCL, expressed gratitude for returning to the Fever, stating that her earlier comments may have been misunderstood.

“The internet likes to stir things up sometimes, and it made me appear ungrateful, which is the last thing I want,” she said.

In a conversation with podcast co-host West Wilson, Cunningham seemed a bit let down by her new deal. She mentioned that her comeback from injury had its challenges. “It was difficult because I hadn’t played in front of any teams before. There was a lot happening this offseason. I was in the clear and had all the doctors’ confirmations, yet there’s always that lingering doubt,” she noted.

She further expressed her frustration, saying, “I’m a straightforward person. If I had concerns, I would be honest about it. Honestly, I’m just focused on winning. It’s a business, sure, but I just want to win.”

She acknowledged that the contract served as a “great wake-up call” not to grow complacent. “It’s added more fire under me,” she stated. “Coming back from a significant injury, I’m feeling good both physically and mentally.”

Last season, the forward averaged 8.6 points and developed a strong bond with teammate Caitlin Clark. Both players are set to kick off the upcoming season on May 9 against the Dallas Wings.
