Alan Dershowitz Leaves Democratic Party
Well-known civil liberties lawyer Alan Dershowitz has announced his departure from the Democratic Party.
In a recent op-ed for the Wall Street Journal, he expressed that the party’s growing anti-Israel stance made it untenable for him to continue his support. Consequently, he has changed his party registration.
“I … urge pro-Israel Americans to change their party affiliation or at least vote against the Democratic Party,” he stated.
Dershowitz, a lifelong Democrat, reminisced about his early days campaigning for local candidates as a teenager in Brooklyn. He’s been a registered Democrat for 67 years and has a very limited history of supporting Republicans. “However, I decided to take the plunge and register as a Republican,” he noted.
The emeritus professor from Harvard Law School mentioned that while he disagrees with Republicans on issues like abortion, taxes, and health care, his focus will be on supporting them for Israel’s sake.
“We will do everything in our power to prevent Democrats from taking control of the House and Senate,” he added. He plans to financially support Republican candidates, engage in campaigning, and encourage pro-Israel Americans to reconsider their affiliations.
Having initially left the Democratic Party and registered as independent in 2024, Dershowitz’s views have evolved further as he perceives the party to be “the most anti-Israel political party in American history.”
Dershowitz, who has been a prominent figure in several high-profile cases, also represented President Donald Trump during his first impeachment and played a role in the team handling Harvey Weinstein’s case.
