Potential Change for the Yankees’ Uniforms
The New York Yankees, renowned for their traditional approach, currently hold the title of the only Major League Baseball team without an official alternate uniform. This has been their stance for more than 120 years, but there’s a possibility of change on the horizon.
Recent reports from The Athletic indicate that players from the Yankees have suggested to management the idea of introducing new jerseys. Importantly, these proposals would not involve altering their iconic home pinstripes.
Seasonal practices have seen the Bronx Bombers donning navy blue tops with “New York” emblazoned across them during spring training. If a shift does occur, it may likely involve these jerseys being worn on the road. Interestingly, wearing home pinstripes has become more common during home spring training games in contrast to the blue tops featuring the Interlocking NY logo.
In the past, the Yankees have experimented with various jersey designs. For example, during the 2017-2019 Players Weekend, they honored the 1912 team in Boston, celebrating Fenway Park’s centenary with special jerseys. They also commemorated the Black Yankees in 1996 and showcased replicas of their 1921 road uniforms for the inaugural Field of Dreams game in 2021. However, none of these designs made it into their standard rotation.
Currently, the Yankees are unique in not featuring last names on the backs of their uniforms, both for home and away games. They also join the Athletics as the only teams lacking City Connect jerseys. The Athletics are set to transition to Las Vegas by 2028, and their future plans remain a topic of discussion.
The Athletic’s report suggests that owner Hal Steinbrenner may ultimately have the final word regarding any new uniforms. It’s worth noting that recent years have shown flexibility in the Yankees’ traditional practices; for example, starting in 2023, they will incorporate advertising patches on their jerseys. Additionally, facial hair regulations have relaxed under Steinbrenner’s governance, which contrasts with the strict bans imposed by his father, George Steinbrenner.
For now, though, the Yankees will stick with their classic road gray uniforms. They are scheduled to return to Fenway Park Wednesday as they continue their nine-game road trip, having achieved a record of 14-9 so far this season.
