Concerns Over Teen Takeovers in Chicago
A city councilman from Chicago is raising alarms about police being effectively “handcuffed” in dealing with a wave of teenage takeovers in the city, particularly following a series of incidents under the leadership of Democratic Mayor Brandon Johnson.
Chicago City Councilman Raymond Lopez, also a Democrat, expressed to Fox News Digital that the mayor needs to take decisive action, warning that without intervention, this summer could become “very long, very brutal” due to the ongoing disturbances. He pointed out that the city’s policies have restricted law enforcement from adequately responding to these events that have been on the rise lately.
“It seems to me that Mayor Johnson isn’t doing enough to disrupt these gatherings,” Lopez remarked. “Chicago has turned into a hotspot for these illegal street takeovers, drawing hundreds of young people to these events. Whether we call it mob action or illegal vehicle takeovers, it’s clear that people are intentionally coming here for that.”
Lopez added, “They are aware that they can act without consequences, and our police often find themselves unable to manage or intervene in these situations.”
He emphasized that officers aren’t permitted to act decisively with those involved in these takeover incidents, which restricts their ability to handle the situation effectively. “Our police haven’t been given the authority to engage fully, make arrests, or even impound vehicles as the law allows,” he said. “Also, we’ve largely overlooked the individuals promoting these events on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram.”
Lopez’s comments followed a weekend where no arrests were made at a large street occupation on the South Side, which he highlighted as a serious accountability issue with the event’s organizers.
Video footage from the Gresham neighborhood captured crowds gathered around a vehicle engulfed in flames, with one individual seen hurling an object into the car, which exploded moments later.
Interestingly, Mayor Johnson did not use the term “takeover” in a recent social media update. Instead, he warned residents about a potential “teen trend” taking shape in the South Side. “Residents, there are credible reports of this trend forming,” he stated. He urged parents to be cautious about their children’s whereabouts, warning how quickly these gatherings could escalate into violence. “These can be dangerous and often become violent,” he cautioned.
Footage circulating from a takeover event on March 30 showed teens climbing into cars and crowding streets, which emphasizes the chaotic nature of these gatherings.
During the latest takeover, police issued multiple curfew violations, and a 16-year-old was arrested on suspicion of unlawful weapon possession and other charges.
Residents, like Jason Hale from Hyde Park, have expressed frustration too. He noted that his vehicle was among those damaged in a recent hijacking, reflecting the broader issue of property damage and safety concerns in the area.
“It’s a mess. There’s thousands of dollars in damage to my car,” Hale shared, visibly upset. “There are dents and footprints everywhere.”
Fox News Digital has reached out to Mayor Johnson’s office for a response to these issues.
