Reese Witherspoon Addresses AI Backlash
Actress Reese Witherspoon recently faced criticism for her endorsement of generative AI, emphasizing that she doesn’t want technology to replace humans.
She generated quite a reaction last week after encouraging women to engage with generative AI.
“Well…I decided it was time,” Witherspoon noted on Instagram. “The AI revolution has begun. I need to learn as much as I can about AI and share it with you. By the way, jobs held by women are three times more likely to be automated by AI, yet women engage with AI about 25 percent less than men. We don’t want to be left behind. So… would you like to learn with me?”
While she had some supporters, like actress Kerry Washington, critics quickly accused her of promoting Big Tech and contributing to job losses. On Tuesday, Witherspoon clarified her stance.
“Well, I think my AI post got people talking,” she mentioned in a follow-up on Tuesday. “To be clear, no one is paying me to talk about this. I’m just a curious person. My kids are learning about AI tools; I know founders working on vibe coding, and I’m paying attention to how people are using AI across various businesses.”
“But I want to acknowledge that people’s concerns are valid. I understand that this could affect jobs in many sectors,” she added. “I’m also aware of environmental issues. I care deeply about local communities, and I’m apprehensive about the rise of AGI. I don’t believe computers should replace humans. I want to learn as much as I can about this technological shift. If you want to join me, great! If not, that’s fine too.”
Witherspoon’s support for AI isn’t new; back in September 2025, she mentioned that AI could open doors for female filmmakers. “It’s crucial for women to be involved in AI because it’s the future of filmmaking,” she pointed out. “You can be saddened about changes, but change is here. Creativity and hands-on craftsmanship will always have a place, even if they’re somewhat overshadowed.”
