Dave Mason, Rock Legend and Traffic Co-Founder, Passes Away

NEW YORK – Dave Mason, a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and co-founder of the iconic British band Traffic, has passed away at his home in Gardnerville, Nevada. He was 79 years old.

The news was confirmed by his spokesperson, Melissa Dragic, but the cause of his death has not yet been determined. Last summer, Mason had to cancel his remaining tour dates and he later announced his retirement, citing health problems stemming from an infection and marking the end of “60 glorious years of rock ‘n’ roll.”

Mason was born on May 10, 1946, in Worcester, England. In 1967, he teamed up with Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi, and Chris Wood to form Traffic. The band became known for its unique sound, blending psychedelic rock with Mason’s intricate guitar work and songwriting prowess.

While “Feelin’ Alright?” might not have been an instant success for Mason, it was famously covered by several artists, including Joe Cocker and the Jackson 5, turning it into a beloved classic over time.

Mason’s connection to Traffic was quite complex; he left the band multiple times throughout the years. In 1969, he embarked on a solo career, which produced three gold-certified albums, featuring hits like “Only You Know and I Know.” His album “Alone Together” even earned a platinum certification.

Additionally, Mason collaborated on major projects with musical legends such as the Rolling Stones, George Harrison, Paul McCartney & Wings, and Jimi Hendrix.

Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004 for his contributions to Traffic, his former bandmates publicly honored him this week. Steve Winwood took to Instagram to express, “Dave was an early member of Traffic and played an important role in shaping the band’s sound and identity.” He acknowledged Mason’s lasting impact on music, emphasizing that his contributions will always be remembered.

Mason is survived by his wife, Winifred Wilson, his daughter, Danielle, and other family members. His legacy in the music world leaves behind a profound influence on countless listeners.
