A Longtime Georgia Congressman Has Passed Away
David Scott, a veteran Democrat from Georgia, has died at 80 years old, as confirmed by his office. Scott was a prominent figure in politics, first gaining election to the Georgia State Legislature in 2010 after a lengthy career, which began with his introduction in the State Senate in 1982.
His death marks the fifth loss among members of the 119th Congress since they took office in January 2025.
During the 2024 re-election campaign, there were voices within the Democratic Party suggesting that Scott should consider stepping down to pave the way for younger individuals. “David Scott represents the case for term limits,” one anonymous lawmaker mentioned. “He was a respected and capable member, but many believe his effectiveness was slipping.”
Despite this criticism, Scott secured re-election that year and was preparing to run again. The cause of his passing has not been disclosed.
Hakeem Jeffries, the Minority Leader from New York, expressed his sorrow, stating, “The news of Congressman Scott’s death is genuinely tragic. He was a trailblazer in his district and rose from poverty to become the first African-American to lead the Agriculture committee. He was genuinely dedicated to the people he served.”
Congressman Mike Johnson from Louisiana also paid tribute, mentioning Scott’s two decades of faithful service in Georgia and sending condolences to his family during this difficult time.
Noteworthy is the fact that Scott’s passing comes amid various recent resignations within Congress, indicating a turbulent period. Currently, Republicans maintain a slight majority in the House.
Now, Georgia’s Governor Brian Kemp has a week to call for a special election. Six Democrats have already stepped up to challenge Scott’s seat in an upcoming primary on May 19, which polls are indicating is likely to favor their party.
