Hulk Hogan’s Struggles with Pain and Fentanyl Use
Hulk Hogan revealed that he used an astonishing amount of fentanyl, the highest reported by doctors for a patient, in an attempt to cope with “excessive pain” toward the end of his wrestling career.
The WWE icon, who passed away from a heart attack in July 2025, candidly discussed his battles with addiction in a Netflix docuseries titled “Hulk Hogan: The Real American,” released recently.
“I took 80 milligrams of fentanyl at 2 a.m., stuffing it under my gums,” Hogan detailed, showing the method he used to take the drug.
During the interview, he mentioned, “I had two 300mg fentanyl patches on my legs, and I was consuming six 1500mg fentanyl lollipops.”
He recounted a pharmacy visit where the pharmacist reacted in shock, saying, “You should die. I’ve never seen anyone take so much fentanyl.”
Hogan started relying on fentanyl for pain relief after joining TNA (Total Nonstop Action) following his divorce from Linda Hogan in 2009. He described how, after the divorce, he felt “bankrupt” and needed the TNA contract to regain financial stability.
“I hit rock bottom and gave Linda a 70 percent,” he stated, obviously frustrated. “I wanted to forget everything because I didn’t want any contact with her.” He admitted, “The situation was dire.”
Although Hogan was not in a condition to compete in TNA, he insisted that the opioids allowed him to fulfill his contract, despite his health concerns.
“I couldn’t sleep in bed. I had to sit in a chair, and even bending my fingers would send my back into spasms,” he shared.
Eric Bischoff, a wrestling executive who played a key role in getting Hogan into TNA, described this period as “the darkest, most devastating time” in Hogan’s life.
According to Bischoff, “Hulk didn’t want to wrestle, but he needed the money. Your wife leaves you, and the doctor hands you these drugs that could take down a horse, all while you’re drinking a quart of vodka daily.”
He even reflected, “Sometimes, I felt guilty for allowing him to continue down that path.”
Hogan’s last wrestling appearance was in 2012, and he left TNA after his contract expired in 2013.
He died at age 71 due to a heart attack and was laid to rest in a private ceremony in Clearwater, Florida, the following August. Records indicate that his death was classified as natural.
Additionally, it was revealed that Hogan had been struggling with leukemia and atrial fibrillation.
Hogan had two children, Brooke and Nick, with his ex-wife Linda. He married Skye Daly in September 2023.
